The 5th International Shogi Festival (ISF) 2011 will take place in Rueil Malmaison (Paris) from Thursday 27th of October 2011 to Sunday 30th of October 2011. The ISF tournament will have representatives from many countries who have qualified through national selection processes. There will also be an open tournament - the "George Hodges Memorial tournament", a Dobutsu shogi tournament, and appearances by shogi professionals.
The event is being hosted by the French Federation of Shogi, under the auspices of the Nihon Shogi Renmei, the Embassy of Japan in France, and the municipality of Rueil-Malmaison. The event is being supported by Yomiuri Shimbun, Nikkei Shimbun, Sankei Shimbun and Kumon.
Several of the London shogi group (Les Blackstock, Andy Hammond, David Faldon and Steven Cain) will be there and it's not too late for you to join them. For further information please visit isf.shogi.fr.
This tournament was held in New York on 14-15 November 2009, and I (Steven Cain) was lucky enough to be attending as the British representative, although I did not last long in a very strong field of amateur competitors from across the world.
I may write about my trip on Shogi London Supplement but for the moment I will note that the tournament was won very impressively by Paul Ogi, and that a short report has been posted on Shogi-L by Larry Kaufman here. Larry expects to provide more detail when this becomes available.
